Grief is a constant in the human experience. Not only is there grief after a loved one has passed, grief is also experienced in the end of relationships, the loss of a job, the end of a dream. If grief is a constant, why is it that many try to ignore it, tough it it, get back to normal activity as if nothing happened? Why have we allowed death to become something to be feared?

Grief is an emotion, and like all other emotions, it is neither bad or good. Grief is there for you to process your feelings of loss. Yes, it can be raw and gut wrenching. Yes, it can feel as if you will never be happy again. But these are not reasons to ovoid processing your feelings.

Grief cannot be ignored away. The only way to heal is to feel it all. Bawl, howl, keen, go within, keep to yourself, comfort yourself, do whatever you need to do. There is no timeline, but, ignoring grief will make it last longer. Be gentle with yourself, give yourself love. Ask for, and accept, all the help you need. Then there will come a time where the sun shines again. A time where it doesn’t hurt to remember.
